FAQ

PARTS OF AN ORCHESTRAL STRING INSTRUMENT

1. HOW LONG ARE THE RENTAL CONTRACTS?

Our minimum contract duration is four (4) months, referred to as the “trial period.”  After the trial period, contracts can go month to month, with an automated charge mid-month - or - contracts can go annual, where payment for one (1) year is paid upfront and receive two months free of rent.

A contract is terminated once the instrument is returned to the store. We do not pro-rate the rental fee, however, if the instrument is returned BEFORE the 15th of the month, no payment will be required for that month.

2. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO RENT AN INSTRUMENT?

Our rates are based on the size and type of instrument. Please see the chart for details:

Violin & Co. also offers insurance for the rental instrument at an additional charge. Please see Terms & Conditions for details.

 3. DO I HAVE TO GET THE INSURANCE?

Although insurance is highly recommended for all of our young players, the insurance is not mandatory.  However, if an instrument is considered damaged beyond repair, or repairs are estimated greater than the value of the instrument, the insurance allows for a deductible payment considerably lower than full retail value of the instrument.

4. HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SIZE TO GET?

It is always best to ask your teacher to what size is best, however, we can measure and fit the student with the appropriate size.

5. WHAT ARE YOUR STORE HOURS?

Our current hours of operation can be found at

www.violinandco.com/contact - or - www.facebook.com/violinandco/

6. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN MY BOW/INSTRUMENT?

You should wipe down your instrument after playing to avoid rosin build-up.  Using a microfiber cloth or an old t-shirt, gently wipe away any dust/powder residue on the instrument and bow stick.  Be extra cautious around the bridge as it is NOT glued and can shift causing the sound to change or damage to the instrument.

7. DO YOU INSTALL STRINGS?

Yes.  We install strings free of charge if they are purchased in our store.  You can bring your own strings and we would be happy to install them for a nominal fee.

8. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I ROSIN MY BOW?

How often to rosin depends on how often you play.  As you become more accustomed to playing, you will notice when the bow needs rosin.  Be cautious to not over rosin, too much rosin can clog the bow and require re-hair more often.

9. WHAT IS ROSIN?

Rosin is a fine powder that creates friction between the horse hair on the bow and the strings.  It is derived from the Pine tree, the sap resin is heated until the desired consistency.

10. CAN I LEAVE MY INSTRUMENT IN THE CAR WHILE I SHOP?

NO.  Instruments are made of wood which is sensitive to extreme temperature changes.  Leaving the instrument in the car or near an AC/heating vent can cause severe damage, open seams, and cracks.

12. HOW OFTEN SHOULD AN INSTRUMENT BE “MAINTAINED”?

We recommend, at the minimum, a once a year “check-up” to keep your instrument at its best.  However, it is also best to have your instrument inspected with the temperature changes (every six [6] to twelve [12] months), to assure there are no developing cracks or open seams.

13. WHAT DOES “REGULAR MAINTENANCE” ENTAIL?

At Violin & Co., our regular maintenance for rentals include the following:

· New set of strings once a year

· New bow or bow re-hair once a year

· Tuning and peg lubrication when needed

· Bridge adjustments as needed/recommended by a teacher

· Up-sizing
